Scheels All Sports

Living Color is proud to have worked with International Concept Management in the design, fabrication, and installation of twin aquariums in the Scheels All Sports store in Sparks, Nevada. The 248,000 square foot store, featuring the two aquariums opened in September 2008.

The beautiful custom aquariums, one freshwater and one saltwater are each about 43 feet in length. They hold a combined 32,000 gallons of water and took more than 2000 man-hours for Living Color to complete. More than 30 members of our 50+ member staff worked directly on this project and all Living Color employees contributed to its success.

Living Color provided the artificial saltwater reefs and the freshwater rockwork and plants as well as the lighting and filtration systems for both aquariums. As with all custom Living Color aquariums, the in-aquarium plumbing is well hidden inside the exhibitry and nearly impossible to see.

The filtration equipment, which keeps the water crystal clear and biologically healthy for the fish is remotely located in two large rooms, one for each aquarium. Each system is specifically designed to optimize the conditions needed for the types of fish that will occupy the aquarium. In this case, one of the challenges was that the freshwater and saltwater systems had to support drastically different temperature ranges. The saltwater fish selected for the Scheels store thrive at 78°F, while the freshwater fish, many of them indigenous to the Sparks Nevada area prefer 60°F. This was accomplished by selecting a different chiller system for each aquarium.

The Loxahatchee River Center

Below are some excerpts from the "Palm Beach Post" article written about the Loxahatchee River Center by Lady Hereford.

In this museum, touching is not only allowed, it's encouraged.

Visitors to the new Loxahatchee River Center will not only see examples of the river's various habitats, but they'll also have a chance to experience interactive exhibits. One of the first exhibits is an 1,800-gallon freshwater aquarium that was built to represent the wild and scenic part of the river. In one, observers will get to see firsthand how a flood plain works by unleashing a rush of water into a tank. In another, visitors will make choices to see how difficult it can be to balance water uses.

An artist's giant replica of a cypress tree with a built-in video screen greets visitors as they arrive. The display provides an overview of the exhibits, which take the visitor on a mini-tour of the river's habitats, starting with the cypress swamp and leading to estuaries with oyster reefs and mangroves, sea grasses, dock pilings and ending with coral reefs.

The tour also includes an educational component to show observers where their drinking water comes from. It also includes information about conservation and recycling.

Among the other exhibits is a touch tank where visitors can interact with starfish, sea cucumbers, sea urchins, hermit crabs, snails and horseshoe crabs.

Observers also will see a dock piling tank. Concrete pilings are better for marine life than pressure-treated ones, O'Neill said. "You create a kind of mini ecosystem that brings in a bunch of fish," she said.

The tour concludes with a saltwater aquarium that represents the area from the Jupiter Inlet to the offshore reef, as well as an informational room where visitors can learn more information about how they can do their part to protect the river.

Fall 2007

Living Color has been moving in many new and exciting directions. We continue to build our Custom Cabinetry division and remain a worldwide leader in one-of-a-kind aquariums. In fact, we are currently installing a shark exhibit in a high-rise condominium lobby on South Beach that is 53 feet long 8 feet wide and 5 feet deep, a 15,900-gallon aquarium system!

In other aquarium matters, we are now builders of certain types of filtration systems, are creators of an algaecide that is non-toxic to your fish, and are also becoming distributors of products such as filter floss and synthetic aquarium sea salts, all of which are being done to keep your final costs down.

On a slightly different and exciting note, we have been requested by few of our clients to not only care for the water needs of their fish, but also their personal water needs. After doing some research, we have selected Voss Water, a natural artesian water that can be found in top restaurants and hotels around the world. We have recently become wholesalers of this product, which we will be able to sell to you at discounted rates, if you are a local resident in the Broward, Dade or Palm Beach County area you may stop by to pick up your order, or we can ship it to you upon request.

Custom Multi-piece Reef Inserts

View animated assembly

Beautiful, functional, and - most of all - easily maintained, Living Color's all new multi-piece reef systems are the future of innovative custom aquarium decor. Designed with the utmost beauty, each piece is hand sculpted and finished per client requests using Living Color's patented rockwork design and molded coral pieces. These reefs function not only as decorative habitat, but will also help to conceal unsightly plumbing lines and overflow boxes. Plumbing drains and returns may also be designed directly into the reef itself for public aquarium style exhibitry. Even more spectacular is the fact that these structures can fit into most major brands of aquariums through existing lid openings and can be removed for cleaning outside the tank if needed.

Using our unique interlocking design, Living Color reef systems create a large, beautiful, and colorful structure that is virtually seamless once installed. Shapes, sizes and viewing angles are unique to each reef and each aquarium application, so please contact a Sales Representative for specific design details and pricing information.

Living Color is busier than ever. Our reefs have evolved over the years, and our artists and marine biologists are constantly researching living coral reefs to more closely replicate them.

Currently under production are the following large custom aquarium projects.

A 650 gallon 3 ft x 4 ft x 7.5 ft tall aquarium in a South Florida beachfront condominium building. The client came to us with a huge space constraint, but truly wanted an aquarium. After a few discussions with them we realized that height was not an issue, and our artisans pondered the idea of a beautiful 7.5' reef wall, much like the ones found deeper around the Pacific Islands. We created a scale model to present to the client, and they loved the idea. We began fabrication, and timed our production with the completion of the building. It will be commissioned in 2 weeks. Check back soon, for completed project images.

A large 40 ft. long x 5 ft. wide x 5 ft. high aquarium, built around a rectangular structural pillar. The Joon Trading Company will install this aquarium in a restaurant in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

An 8 ft tall x 8ft diameter cylinder, built around an offset structural pillar for La Borde Builders in La. The cylinder will be craned in and dropped over the pillar during installation.

A 2,000 gallon, 12 ft long x 4 ft wide x 6 ft high aquarium to be utilized as a large divider between a lobby and a bar in a wellness center at the Four Seasons property located in West Lake Village, California. It requires a specially designed, completely remote filtration room on the floor below.

A 12 ft diameter by 6 ft high aquarium at the Cocoa Beach Surf Company in Cocoa Beach, Florida. After speaking with our sales person at an industry trade show, the owner selected our company to build the centerpiece for his vision, the largest surfing complex in the world. After visiting Big Al's Aquarium Supercenter in Tamarac, Florida and viewing their shark aquarium he decided that it was a perfect fit.
